25. Stories

The arrival of summer meant the same thing every year: two months in the tent that we planted near the house of my uncles. And two months of raids in my 65 year Vespino, lilac and souped-cylinder, also known as "the cof-cof" with my cousins \u200b\u200band friends neighbors. So we spent the summer goofing on those roads and nearby towns.

But the summer of 85 would provide a novelty that would upset my plans.
there during the holidays saw little television, and as we went out every night, not listened to much radio. So that event took me by surprise. English television broadcast live the great event of the year, decade to century: the huge Live Aid concert , which was held simultaneously in Philadelphia and London, and Bob Geldof organized , Guapito Irish scoundrel who sang it in he did not like Mondays, and starred "The Wall" film Alan Parker of the Pink Floyd album .

Dozens of leading figures
world together for the first time, to benefit famine victims in Africa.

My uncles had a black and white TV, but since we did not have power line running through the solar panels that my uncle Leonardo had installed on the roof. I never knew if solar technology because it was not even that bad, or if that was not enough for Leonardo so was my uncle, but the fridge is not cooling and was seen on TV very very rare.

And the day came, and there I was, trying to see and hear a black and white TV that almost magically worked, and which reflected the full screen and the hot sun porch that surrounded DRYLAND.

do not remember how many hours I spent watching television, sitting in a folding camping chair, and praying that those solar panels will not expire before the end of the concert. Ate, tea and dinner with a tray on my lap and looked confused at my grandmother could not understand anything.

Today, when looking for information on that concert, I was horrified to discover that I do not remember Neil Young , Or Elvis Costello . Of course I did not know them then. I well remember a very young Madonna which still had much to prove, singing "Into the Groove" , one of my favorite songs ever. And

Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet , which were fantastic. Duran Duran were a lot of talk because it seems that Simon, the gorgeous and super Simon Le Bon, improper cock gave a great star who was just on rush-hour television event of the millennium, which led to the mockery of the press British era. I do not remember well, I guess because at that moment was pulling me hair, poisoned with rage and erection teenage schoolboy. I do not remember it, but it was so. Reviewing the original videos no doubt: two minutes and fifty-five seconds of song, Simon throws away a rooster that goes around the world.

remember Bryan Ferry, was then one of my favorite singers. I've always loved his peculiar voice, and the appreciation of the great versions of the great songs. I owe him the discovery of "Jealous Guy" of Lennon at that concert. And that tone that was several times while he played.
However, the big stars were the usual Clapton, Sting and Queen or Dire Straits.

But above all remember well that three appearances for various reasons, be worth it all day watching television that nothing worked: Thompson Twins, U2 and David Bowie.

The Thompson Twins were one of my favorite bands. A pop group who knew how to flirt with the techno-and every year launched wonderful songs like "Lay your hands on me" or Hold I now ". They played it last and amazing theme named "Revolution" , and that turned out to be The Beatles with Madonna backing vocals in the background. Fantastic.

U2 was a band already known. Topics such as "Sunday Bloody Sunday" or mainly "New year's day" had sounded much. I even had some records of them. But the interpretation of "Bad" , a subject hidden in his then latest album , more than ten minutes was the most spectacular of that mega. Even Bono allowed to introduce some classic topic sentences Lou Reed or The Rolling Stones in the long development of the song. And the unmistakable guitar of The Edge like magic. It was so exciting and so shocking that I got to drop some tears as my grandmother knitting without removing the astonished gaze.

And yes, David Bowie appeared . I basically knew that strange music video "Ashes to Ashes" which I loved, and his great success "Let's Dance" . But Bowie sang up to that stage masterful classics like "Rebel Rebel" , unknown to me then, currencies and "Modern Love", I adored, and a strange and long song, dreary and spooky attractive to called "Heroes" , and I knew in Castilian by the Permanent Paralysis version . That man had the power to sing that song like the last thing you do in life. And I I understood perfectly. Again changed my understanding of music, my way of looking at things and enjoy them. That fall, I bought books about him, and a few newly reissued vinyl that I ate without thinking. Something that I continue with the same emotion at the time. And yes, I recognize that even today would kill to have been at that moment there.

never forgive myself for not having heard before that issue, and not have organized everything to be peaceful and at home with my color TV, and enjoying the pleasure and envy, with my life parked for several hours. I still have the memory ... and YouTube, of course.
